October 2011 podcast – Mulla

In the latest addition of our podcast, the Origenes crew presents Mulla.
Here a Q&A with Josh.

Q: So Josh, you headed back to Sydney in February and left Amsterdam and Origenes behind, how has this been for you?

A: In one word, tough. Myself and Luigi who is also part of the Origenes crew have been trying to build up something with a similar flavour in Sydney but it’s taking time to get traction. Watching the boys back in Amsterdam go from strength to strength makes us proud, but we’d love to be there partying with them!

Q: It’s the one year anniversary of Origenes, what do you see happening for them in the next year?

A: It’s too hard to predict. With this group of people anything can happen. If we asked ourselves where we wanted to be in a years time we would have all been happy to be where we are now, I think we’ve exceeded expectations. But the best thing about this group is their determination to do better. I think there is going to be a lot more to come.

Q: So what can you tell us about this podcast?

A: It’s a bit more focussed towards Techno. I must have been missing it, because there is hardly any here in Sydney, so I’ve been really focussed on building a few techno sets over the past few months!

Q: Will we see you back in Amsterdam any time soon?

A: You better believe it!

June 2011 podcast – Alex Preda

In the latest addition of our podcast, the Origenes crew presents Alex Preda. Here a Q&A with Alex.

Q: Alex, most of the Origenes fans would be used to seeing you alongside your partner in crime Dragos, but we all know there is another side of you that comes out in your own sets. What would you say the real difference is?

A: It is true that I have mostly been playing together with Dragos (aka Mentis Abutor) as Sonocracy, but we are both showing our individual identities as well. I tend to be more melodic, uplifting and sometimes dramatic, going through progressive and techno styles. I love those great melodic lines combined with hard base lines and beats. Sonocracy is blending many more styles with a different approach, in the end giving to techno a different twist, a cool one, of course!

Q: You’ve also been pretty busy with producing some awesome new tracks – what can we expect from you in this regard over the upcoming year?

A: Yeah, I have just released an EP called “Hell / Heaven” on “Minimo Records” together with a Romanian friend, Frantz. You can find this for download on Beatport here. This EP is expressing the contrast between my musical approach and Frantz’s. Have a listen to see what I mean.
Just a couple of days ago I signed another track (“Looking Around”) with the new label “Electric Music”. This will be released on the coming weeks. By the way, the owner of this label has invited Sonocracy to play at his party “Emerge” – don’t miss it! Check “Electric Amsterdam” on Facebook for details.
Furthermore, I am working on an album and an EP right now. These are expected to be released by the end of this year.

Q: The last Origenes party was a blast, with a massive turnout and another great night. Where do you see it going in the future?
A: I am every time surprised at Origenes parties, I see more people having fun and going crazy on our beats. Everybody seems to like our concept. I want to thank to all for making Origenes such a great place to be. I look forward to the next blast!

Q: Finally, any big plans for the next few months?

A: I want to dedicate more time on producing in order to release some rocking tracks. You will be soon hearing some hot new stuff from me, but as well from Sonocracy. I am also looking forward to collaborating with the guys from Origenes. So, it is going to be busy and fun!

May podcast – Juan Zarco

Enigmatic Spanish DJ, Juan Zarco, presents this month’s edition of the Origenes podcast. Juan is well known within the Origenes circle for his upbeat and energetic personality, a trait which is not lost in his sets. A selection of melodic and grooving tech house tracks that can take you from sunset to sunrise.

Juan, what can we expect from this month’s podcast?

Don’t expect anything just listen to it while you are washing the dishes, driving, making love to your girl…let it be your soundtrack for 50 minutes.

With Origenes fourth party up and coming, how excited are you to be involved?

Always excited to be part of something that is growing and it’s fresh. The mash up of styles and people coming to the parties make Origenes a unique offer in Amsterdam’s nightlife.

You will be playing in the new second room for this party – will you be adapting your style for this or will it be business as usual?

I always adapt myself to the place and crowd, leaving my personal stamp of course. I think that house music is a combination of many different factors not only the music itself. If you are able to combine all these factors well, you have a great party.

What’s next for yourself and Origenes?

Next it’s Origenes fourth party and then the fifth and then the sixth… The aspiration is always to have people intrigued about what the next party will be like.

March podcast – Paul Williams

Spring is in the air, and the March edition of the Origenes podcast will put a spring in your step.  This time around it’s the turn of Paul Williams, who, together with Juan Zarco, has been the driving force behind Amsterdam’s Kajukembo night for the past two years.

A few words …

The Origenes parties will really be an opportunity to open up what I’ve been playing over the last few years.  Kajukembo is a ‘gezellig’ night where we push it at the end, but my bit in the first party Origenes went beyond that.  And this mix is more of the same.  A few considerations for home listening at the start, then peak time all the way.  But hey, enough of my yacking – what do you say, let’s boogie.

February Podcast – Determinators

After a blasting closing performance of Determinators at our last Origenes party, hereby we proudly present the new studio podcast from Determinators. Under the name Determinators, Amsterdam Dance Event 2009 Demolition winner Lexander Gomez (Dual Overdrive) has his own view of techno/electro, as a producer he shapes in his compositions layers between raw techno, electro and different beats.

Q&A

Q: We realized your style is a bit different from the some of the other Origenes djs/producers. How would you define your music?

A: The music I produce I define as “Amsterdam Power”, I certainly believe that as a producer the surroundings of where you live and compose your tracks have a big influence on it. Amsterdam has influenced me on shaping the style of music I write these days. I definitely dig the Amsterdam vibe.

Q: How did your relation with music started?

A: My father always mentioned the stories that when I was very young and I would hear music like a national anthem or a classical music piece playing I would normally get very emotional about it. My parents figured I had a special connection with music, so they enrolled me in a special conservatorium for young kids at the age of 5 where I studied for 7 years. As a teenager, I started to listen to metal music which I found so fascinating for the complexity of rhythms and very fast melodies. I decided to start playing the electric guitar and at the age of 17 I started my first band.

Q: We saw you playing with little machines in the last party, what gear do you use in your live performances?

A: At live performances indeed I like to use extra machines. Normally as extras I use a korg kaoss pad 3 and a korg kaossilator with my dj sets. With the kaoss pad I can apply effects like filters, delays, distortion to the main output of what Im deejaying. The fact that the kaoss pad is controlled with a touchscreen surface definitely makes it very dynamic and the effects can have a ‘human feel’ to it when triggered with the touchscreen. The kaossilator works as a synthesizer where I can do improvisations of lead or bass notes while tracks are playing to give the tracks an actual color and a more ‘live’ experience.

Q: You had some recognition in the last 2 editions of the Amsterdam Dance Event … what happened?

A:In 2009, my other electronic project (Dual Overdrive) won a competition called ‘ADE Demolition’ of the Amsterdam Event Panel that year. The competition consists of a group of judges listening live to 10 pre-selected unreleased tracks and giving their personal feedback in order to select one winner. It was definitely an honour to receive the prize on our track (Kubrical) from experienced people of the electronic music world as Dave Clarke, Tommy Sunshine, Stacey Pullen and Jonty Skruff.

In the last edition of 2010, one of the “Determinators” tracks (The return of the hal 9000) went as first runner up in the same competition.

Q: What are your plans for the next months?

A: The next step is definitely keep performing live (which btw on April 16th. of the current year I’ll have the honour on deejaying on the same party as Dr. Lektroluv in Utrecht, it’s gonna be massive!), release new tracks, trying to involve more synthesizers to the live performances and keep the good work with the Origenes crew on organizing more editions of our parties in Amsterdam.

December podcast – Sonocracy

As the temperature drops, Origenes are proud to bring you some music make you forget your winter blues. This month in our podcast are the boys of Sonocracy, Alex and Dragos. The Romanian duo were very popular at the last Origenes party, their set full of grooves and funky melodies…

Q&A

Q: The Origenes party was last Friday night, how did you find it?
A: It was a great party with great people, the response we got from them was beyond our expectations! The Origenes project brings valuable experience to us and we look forward to the next party.

Q: As a duo, how do you find playing music with each other?
A: We enjoy playing together and sharing our ideas for the sets, we have different approaches and that fits just great.
We were thinking at our December Podcast a couple of days before the Origenes party, how we should do it, how it should sound etc, and .. at a point Dragos said with excitement “what if we record the Podcast at the Origenes Party?”. Brilliant idea!

Q: What are both of your favorite tracks right now?
A: We like various things. At the moment we’re more into tech-house… of course we like to play with elements from different styles as well. We’re focused on keeping our sound fresh so we’re constantly on the run for new banging tracks.

Q: What’s next for the two of you?
A: Our next appearance will be on the 9th of December, at the newly opened H&M store in Dam Square, Amsterdam. Meantime we’re busy with Origenes boys to put up the next party. It’s going to take our crowd through the roof!

Big thanks to Alex and Dragos for this wonderful set. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Keep an eye on this page, coming up next month is After T’s Italian maestro – Cecco..
